I was aboard the Ste. Claire as deckhand on the midnight watch during the summer of 1974. Bob Voce (an engineer now deceased) encouraged me to attend the Great Lakes Maritime Academy following that summer. Please advise how to submit some pictures and contact information. Thanks,

I was a Fireman on the Ste Claire in the late 1970s. I can't remember the exact year (or years), but I was aboard when she lost her steering gear and ran aground. Website: http://whdrummond.org

I worked on the Columbia in 1979..best summer I ever had. I ran the concession stand on the dance floor with another guy, only remember his first name which was "Tony". I remember "Sarah" one of the girls who worked at the souvenir stand by the stairs and "Sophie" who ran the big concession stand on the 1st deck and there was a guy named "Carlo" who worked where they sold cigarettes, and Sheila Braun who worked in the Bob-Lo office near the dock and had the pleasure of taking her out to a Tigers game in 1981. What a great year..wish I had worked there longer.

I was a deckhand on the Ste. Claire during the summers of 1961 & 1962. Some of the names I remember are: Capt. Yonkers, 2nd Mate Charlie, Chef Pete, Band Leader-Don, Deckhands Doc, Bob McDonald, John Goforth.... If anyone knows how I can get in touch with any of the folks who worked during these two summers I would appreciate it if you would let me know...

I recently found the site for the Boblo and added my fathers name to the crew list, Arthur Gilbright Tilley. He passed away in 1970 at the age of 48. He loved working on the Boblo and I have many fond memories of him as a child even though I was only 10 when he passed away. We lived in there when I was a baby, but I don't remember it but my brother does. My father traveled back and forth from Ky. after my siblings where born until his heart would not allow him to work any longer and then his death. He loved those boats and I have many fond memories of him and I thank you for bring them back to life again. My mother also passed away 4 years ago and she also had many memories of Captain Boblo and would let us all about him and the boats. Thank You.

My mother, Sue Morton, worked on the Columbia in the mid 70's. I am proud to say that as a boy I had my turn at the helm of the Columbia under the watchful eye of Capt Beattie. He was a great man and always so kind to me. It always amazed me how Capt. Beattie and Tex Stansfield could kiss the dock so smoothly in any weather. When I saw pictures of the Columbia in it's state of disrepair I almost cried. I see that it might be restored and run on the Hudson in New York. Boy would my mother be surprised if she could take a ride on the Columbia again.

Boblo was the best summer I ever had. My own daughter, now 14, thinks that working at an amusement park was so awesome. I was a ride operator in zone 3 (I think)back in 1986/1987. We had some cool rides at Boblo! I've rarely been back to Amherstburg, let alone Boblo Island. It would be interesting to see what they did to the Island.

I worked on the island from 1987-1993. I started as a ride op in zone 1 (kiddie land) then zone 4 (log flume, coaster, rotor, etc). I became a manager in 1990 and worked as a ride manger until the island closed in 1993.
I visited the island last year for the first time since it closed...it was heartbreaking. The former park area had almost a ghost-like feel to it and it was sad to see it empty and deserted.
I still remember working on Boblo as one of the happiest times in my life! :-)

Hello everybody!! I was the girl who took pictures of people riding the elephant ride back in the early 1970's. My Dad was the guy with the go-tee & the polaroid camera that walked around on the Moonlight Cruise in the 1960's & 1970's shooting pictures of couples on the Moonlight Cruise. His name was Joe Stevens. If anybody remembers him or me, I'd love to hear from you. Right now I am listing the photograph's that he shot of Bob-lo on your very own bobloboat.com website in the ship store so that I can contribute money toward the restoration project. I think my Dad would've liked that. We still adding more pictures and more sizes.

I wish I could have made it to the reunion last summer but work got in the way. Michele Bluit talked to me and it was a pleasure hearing from someone who was a part of some of the favorite times of my past. The pictures of the reunion were well done by all those who contributed. Faces from my years that I remembered were: Michele Bluit, Nancy Horner, Art, and of course Lloyd Williams / where was your toothpick Lloyd!! I worked on deck as a deckhand and then later as an AB Watchman on the Ste. Claire from 1972 thru 1978. Fond memories of my old friend Ken Horner, Nancy Horner, Lou Nelis, Dick Inter, Janet Carmack, Alvie alias Alton Boyd kuka lera chi el karumba as he would say after a few toddys and his close friend Joe bark bark the wheelman. Steve Lutz, Carlie Boles,AB Fritz Martinusen, Tom Bluit, Oiler Wall Street Willy, Norman the guard and of course Lizzi and her sister Colleen Tighe, Capt.Bill Yonkers and Ralph Browning. If anyone has email addresses from the era of 1972-1978 please forward. I could go on and on trying to remeber the names of others like the Pursor, the Chief Engineer but I could fill a page of names and even write a book of events from this era. Thank You again Michele for getting in contact. I lost my email address book to a PC virus I would like yours Michele, Ken Horner's and Nancy Horner's. How can we get old pictures posted to the website??---------Dave Holt

I never worked on the boat, so don't know anybody on this website, but I did go to Boblo Island on the boat many, many times during my childhood. I remember going to the lower deck to use the bathroom and how loud the engines were. Growing up in Detroit, I had a friend by the name of Lynn Browing who lived one street over from me. Her father was an owner of the Browning Lines and I remember going to his mansion on the Detroit River to celebrate Lynn's birthday. I never knew such a life with maids and butlers existed except on television. It seems I've done a little reminiscing this morning, even visited Belle Isle, another place that played a very significant part in my life. I am now 63, so maybe that is what we do as we get older, look back to our memories and happier times.

I worked on the island from 1987 until it closed. I started in the Island House restaurant, then lemonade stand and from 1988 until closing was the Boblo Bear, Homer Simpson and various other characters. Good times!!! I met my husband who was a security guard on the Island and we have been married 8 years with two kids. I look at the island now and there a million dollar homes there - I could have taken a tour of the island but it's hard to see what it is now based on the great years I had there!

The last time I was a Bob-Lo... my husband Ernie and I along with our daughter, Jennifer took our 34 ft. Sea Ray to the Marina on the island. It was owned by AAA at the time. It's great to see some familiar names from previous postings. I only worked on the boat for two summers (88- 89) although had a fantastic time and have really great memories of the crew and all the fun we had. The 4 hour layovers were great times. I remember Howard did not need much convincing to play music so we could dance and I learned the Hustle from some great dancers. Also spent a lot of time hanging out with some of the security guards who convinced myself and others to go to Belle Isle for 2:00am baseball games. I was not legal yet but I think I made my way into Austoria once or twice also. Those were crazy days! I hope everyone is doing well. Thanks for the memories.

Hope to see lots of folks at the reunion! I took the hubby and kids down to Toledo several years back to see the Claire so they could get a glimpse of what the heck I was talking about. They enjoyed the ship, but I don't think that they will ever understand what a special place Boblo was and what the Claire means to me... I worked the one summer that of 1980 that Six Flags owned Boblo...it was quite the summer...began with the first boat heading out with less than a dozen people on board...the last night and a MoJo cruise that was not paid for...had to bring in the DPD riot squad. I loved the boats, from my childhood days and have been sad to see them sitting. I will be heading back home in August and plan to go visit.

This is going to be my 80th Birthday gift to myself to fly to Detroit for the Ste Claire Reunion. As an old crew member back in the early 40's, I know I better bring some Kleenex with me when I see the Old Girl again. I have some great stories to tell the newer crew members of years gone by. The best memories I have of my childhood are the memories of the big Boblo boat docking in Windsor at the foot of Ouellette Avenue. I would look forward to the Ford employee picnic every summer for this very reason. Oh sure we went through Amhurstburg now and then, but the journey on the big boat was a special treat for the whole family. It was an extra special treat when my parents allowed my to come home on the last boat with friends even when they had left on an earlier trip. The island should have remained public (even as a provincial park). The loss of this special place saddens me still, but your devotion to bringing back a little piece of our past is truly heartwarming and it brings a little tear of joy to my eye. Thank you, I look forward to seeing her on the river.

I was traveling through Amherstburg yesterday when I was at the corner of Alma and Sandwich I looked toward the river as the Ste. Claire passed, thought I was having flash backs, tied her up one to many times as a dock hand on the island in the early 80's, then I heard her mighty whistle and new I was ok, we scooted up the river a bit and watched as she was pulled up the river, it was good to see her again!

As you can see, Howard & I ready to relive some old times and have a party! We've got plenty of stories from the Clark St. dock, boats, Astoria and Belle Isle to share. However, we don't just want our fellow 80's groupies, we want to hear from those of you that worked at the old Detroit docks, Gilbralter and the Island too! We are waiting to hear how the tow, coast guard approvals and accomodations go with the Ste. Claire on June 22nd before we firm up our date and location. However, we are hoping to do something maybe in August rather it be on the Ste. Claire or somewhere else. Our biggest obstacle is locating crew, especially sailors who don't seem to stay in one place! Some of the crew we have identified are on ships, so we need to determine how many can join us in the summer, so we can determine if we should follow through with our current plans or consider doing it later or adding an additional winter one when more people are on land. Hopefully the Ste. Claire will be back running on the river in the near future, and we will be one of her annual charters, adding new employees along the way!! Hurry up and contact us! The summer will be over before you know it, just like all those Boblo seasons we enjoyed!

Welcome aboard the Columbia & Ste, Claire Reunion site. It's been 17 years now since I sailed these two great ships and the one thing I really miss are my fellow shipmates I sailed with. We spent most of our days with each other from Mid-May to Labor Day. We had some great times both with passengers and on the the dry runs. Then there was the midnight ball games on Belle Isle and the hours we spent at the Astoria. Well, it's about time we got together and again and re-hashed these great times. If your interested in a reunion or just want to say hello, PLEASE enter your name and email address. If you know someone who worked on the boats, please pase this web site on to them.
Smooth Sailing,
